Conferences
The conference committee arranged for some fun activities this year! They wanted to take advantage of as much as they could of what is offered on the Mississippi
Gulf Coast.
Of course there was Golf sponsored by Mississippi Power Company . We were excited to play at The Preserve Golf Club, which was selected by Golf Digest as one of the best new courses in 2007. Thanks to MDA's Bill Webb, and MPCo's Chuck Ueltschey and Joi Olive for making this a remarkable afternoon.
There were two activities using the coastal waters as settings, both sponsored by the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians. One was the Biloxi Shrimping Trip which sailed along the coastline and showed how the shrimpers catch those tasty treats. The added attraction was seeing all the other creatures the nets capture and all the wildlife attracted to the nets, such as pelicans, other sea birds and dolphins.
The Fishing Trip was aboard a pontoon boat which allowed them to bottom fish along the coastline and nearby islands. There was a lot of bragging going on after it docked!
The other new activity that was lots of fun was “An ExtraORHdinary Afternoon of Art, Shopping & Food.” Sponsored by the Southern Mississippi Planning & Development District and personally hosted by Planning Director Allison Beasley, participants were taken to The Phoenicia Restaurant in Ocean Springs for lunch where they were welcomed by Mayor Connie Moran , after which they had about an hour to shop the boutique shops in Ocean Springs and/or see the Walter Anderson Museum. They were then taken to the Ohr Museum in Biloxi where they took a hard-hat tour of the Frank Geahry-designed Pods being constructed and enjoyed a wine and cheese reception in one of the pods.
Not only were these be great fun, but they were great networking opportunities for MEDC members to meet and get to know other members.
We appreciate the sponsors of these events: Mississippi Power Company for the golf, the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians for the shrimping and the fishing, and the South Mississippi PDD for the ExtraORHdinary Afternoon.
